Getting Started

We have all read a book over the course of our lives that has been enjoyable. Whether it was To Kill a Mockingbird or Spot Goes to the Park, there is literary value in almost every book, especially if it is meaningful to the reader.

So answer me this: what is your favorite book?

Tabula Rasa--The Blank Slate

Tabula Rasa. Translated from Latin, it means "the blank slate." Philosopher John Locke believed that our minds begin as a blank slate and that we fill the slate with information through learning and experience.

This year, we will add information to our slates daily through the reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking we do in class. Literature can be a gateway to thinking about life in a new way and learning about the world around you. Writing about literature is a way to express what you have learned as well as get to know more about yourself. Speaking and listening allow us to learn from our classmates and teachers. We will be doing all of these things in the coming months, as we work hard to fill our tabula rasa!
